Doctor Who: 10 (More) Actors Who Could Replace Jenna Coleman

2. Jonathan Bailey

Why he should be: One of the other potential companions from Series 8 was Psi, played by Jonathan Bailey, who showed up alongside Pippa Bennett-Warner€™s Saibra in Time Heist. Psi resonated with fans immediately and seemed to have huge potential as a character. He was a technologically augmented human who had deleted the memories of everyone he had ever known in order to protect them when he had gotten arrested. This made him quite a tragic figure with a lot of story potential as he rediscovered everyone he had previously known. Even with his memories back, there€™s the potential to follow that storyline, as one of the benefits of the TARDIS is it can go anywhere, so it could explore his background and follows him as he reconnects with the people he used to know. Bailey is a pretty good performer, too. He€™s arguably not as versatile as the likes of De Caestecker but he€™s been solid in shows such as Broadchurch, so he€™s definitely got the ability to do well as a full-time companion. Furthermore, there were hints in his performance that he can create a darker, dynamic relationship with Capaldi€™s Doctor. There was even conflict within Time Heist as Psi€™s more caring nature conflicted with Twelve€™s pragmatism. This could be a really good central relationship to make the show feel fresh and entertaining. Why he shouldn€™t be: Psi seemed to be most popular as part of a pair with Bennett-Warner€™s Saibr, and while that could be a very interesting team to watch on the TARDIS, there€™s not much room to go since Saibra managed to remove her powers. This could lead to an uneven storyline or a bigger focus on one of the two, either with Saibra regaining her mutated powers or following Psi along his reconnections, which could become disappointing or even irritating for those who want more from each character. While the characters might have connected with the audience, at least to an extent, the episode Time Heist itself didn€™t. That could potentially prove to be a bad omen as it might mean that the characters aren€™t as well loved as initially thought - just viewed as the best part of a disappointing episode.
