Doctor Who: 10 (More) Actors Who Could Replace Jenna Coleman
8. Sam Troughton
Why he should be: Like Morgan, Sam Troughton has starred in a show made to fill the Saturday teatime slot when Doctor Who wasnt on, having played Much in the Robin Hood series which ran from 2006 to 2009. That was a supporting role in a similar vein to the companion in Doctor Who, with Robin being the lead but Much being his right hand man. This would suggest that Troughton can manage that hugely important dynamic between the Doctor and the companion and provide the support that Capaldi needs as the Time Lord. Hes a very good theatre actor, too, having worked previously for the Royal Shakespeare Company, so hes got a lot of potential to be a very good companion. Doctor Who has a good record with actors from the RSC, the most notable being a certain Mr David Tennant. While this doesnt mean anything in real terms, its a good omen nonetheless. Troughton also has links to another Doctor, being the grandson of Second Doctor Patrick Troughton. Theres got to be some bonus to that familial link, right? Why he shouldnt be: While hes a really good theatrical actor, Troughtons screen output hasnt been quite as inspiring. He was hugely forgettable in Alien v. Predator and wasnt the standout performer in Robin Hood, as most scenes were stolen by the two villains, played by Richard Armitage and Keith Allen enjoying themselves to the full. This raises questions about how comfortable Troughton is on camera and whether hed be able to stand out against the legions of companions there have been on the show. Furthermore, while he has said hed like to be in Doctor Who, according to IMDb, hes said he wants to play a villain. This would be another reason not to cast him as the companion, as it isnt really the role hes most interested in playing, so instead they should cast someone who does want to fit into that position and save Troughton for the villainous role he craves.
