Doctor Who: 10 Most Annoying Companions Of The Revived Series

3. Martha Jones

Stepping aboard the TARDIS to accompany the Doctor on his ongoing ventures through time and space is hard enough for anyone but it was a particularly gruelling process for Martha Jones. In retrospect, she never stood a chance. Taking over from Rose Tyler (this is back when everyone loved her, by the way - oh, how times change!) was no mean feat and although Martha didn't call it a day until the end of Series 3, nobody would've blamed her had she oped to leave earlier. Let's face it, the Tenth Doctor took her for granted from day one. There's an ongoing argument within the Doctor Who community that Martha was more of a plot device than a character. She was certainly there, perhaps more than anything else, to highlight the Doctor's grief but her first episode, Smith and Jones, set her up as an interesting and dimensional character in her own right. She was working as a student nurse, caught up amidst a plethora of exams and an ongoing family feud and, unlike Rose, she wasn't necessarily looking for any kind of escape when she happened to come across that mysterious Time Lord from outer space. An adventure with her new friend was obviously an offer she couldn't refuse, however (and, let's be honest, who could?), as "just one trip" soon escalated into many more, during which Martha might as well have carried around a banner bearing the words "Nope, I'm still not Rose Tyler" to stop everyone she met from pointing it out to her directly. Poor girl. But seriously. Where did the Martha Jones from Smith and Jones go?! She became a lovesick puppy who just wanted the Doctor to hug her and she seemingly forgot that she was a doctor, too (OK, perhaps that's a little unfair - she did put an icepack on someone's wound that one time). As much as Martha is adored (hypocritically, here are 10 reasons why people need to give her a break), you can't deny that she lived in the shadow of her predecessor. Even single-handedly walking the entire Earth wasn't enough to affirm her worth so there isn't really much else she can do. You can't blame a girl for trying.
