Doctor Who: 10 Most Cringeworthy Moments Of The Revived Series So Far
4. The Human/Dalek Hybrid (Evolution Of The Daleks)
There's a ridiculous amount of stuff to cringe over in the Dalek two-parter from 2007, so much so that i's almost as bad as watching Rose again. Almost.
But in an episode that gives us Pigmen (for no apparent reason), gossipy and secretive Daleks (seemingly for comic effect, though it undercuts any other tension in the scene) and a host of American stereotypes, the prize winner for the most cringe goes to Dalek Sec, after his (literal) merger with a human.
Bless Eric Loren, by the way. He really is trying his best to bring some pathos to the role of a Dalek who now has the heart and emotions of a human. On paper even the whole Dalek hybrid thing seems like it should work. If nothing else, it's a neat mirroring of a similar plot device in Evil of the Daleks, and any story that tries to reference Evil is worthy of our love.
But... well, just look at that thing. Gerry Anderson did a show called Space Precinct back in the mid-90s and even then they were doing better (or at least less embarrassing) creature make up than this. More to the point, the new series usually does better than this. But there's something about that single lifeless eye, those dodgy tentacles and the sheer plasticity of the thing that makes Dalek Sec far more believable if you close your eyes and listen to him than if you're looking straight at him.
Ah, well. At least fans got Andrew Garfield and Ryan Carnes in this one, even if they did put Carnes in equally dumb make up for most of it.
