Doctor Who: 10 Most Underrated Episodes Of The Revived Series

1. Smith And Jones

What is it about Doctor Who series openers that ultimately makes them fizzle into the realms of forgotten episodes? Maybe it's something to do with the fact that the rest of each series is so Earth-shatteringly dramatic that by the time its respective finale arrives, you've completely forgotten how it even all began. Perhaps that's the ultimate intention but a silver lining is that it's always a nice surprise when you go back and revisit a series premiere and remember just how brilliant it actually is. New Earth kicked off this countdown of underrated episodes and the list is ending with a widely discarded series opener, too. 2007's Smith and Jones is noted for marking the arrival of Martha Jones as the Tenth Doctor's new companion but that isn't the only cause for celebration that the beginning of Series 3 brought to the timey-wimey table. It also introduced the Judoon, a platoon of outer space police, who transported Royal Hope Hospital to the Moon in order to catch a Plasmavore who was posing as a human patient in the guise of TV's Anne Reid. Luckily for the Doctor, Martha Jones was a doctor in training at the hospital and as such she was on hand to join forces with the titular Time Lord to bring the blood-sucking culprit to justice. Amen to that. Smith and Jones is generally underrated in the grand scheme of things but it's a brilliant standalone story in its own right. It featured the introduction of a new companion, a brilliant and original monster stormed their way into the Doctor Who mythology and it's also ridiculously fun to say "Judoon platoon on the Moon" so it pretty much wins at life for that quotable alone. Out of all of NuWho's underrated episodes, this one is most worthy of your special attention. What did you think of this list? Are there any other underrated episodes of the revived series?
