Doctor Who: 10 Most Underrated Episodes Of The Revived Series
2. Father's Day
Father's Day is arguably the most underrated offering of the Ninth Doctor's short but sweet tenure but for many it's the episode in which Rose Tyler well and truly took hold of their heart and proceeded to break it into tiny little pieces. The concept is fundamentally simple which is ultimately what makes it so heartbreaking. Rose asks the Doctor to take her back to the day her father passed away and when the fateful moment arrived, she couldn't help but push him to safety and away from the oncoming car that was supposed to result in his untimely demise. That's one of the most interesting aspects of this story. Pete Tyler was supposed to die that day and viewers were with Rose every step of the way as she refused to believe, and then eventually accepted, the gut-wrenching realisation that there are some things that even time travel can't change. It didn't help matters that the deadly Reapers had arrived to repair Earth's time wound by devouring everything within it but the alien adversary was really just the backdrop for a much more intimate story about humanity and the effects that death has on those you leave behind. Here, an ordinary man came face to face with his daughter, all grown up, but the more she lied about his abilities as a father, the further away from her he felt. Sometimes a duffle coat is just a duffle coat and sometimes only the most ordinary man in existence possesses the power to save the world from its imminent destruction. Father's Day is definitely an undervalued gem and it's one that manages to ruin your day and inspire you to become a better person all at the same time. Isn't that when Doctor Who is at its very best?
