Doctor Who: 10 Most Underrated Tenth Doctor Episodes
2. Gridlock
‘Gridlock’ is an odd episode. It has a murky, slightly downtrodden aesthetic and a very claustrophobic atmosphere. Though it’s well regarded by both fans and critics, it never seems to garner the level of praise it deserves.
Aside from some poor CGI, there’s very little to fault. The script is one of the best Davies ever produced for Doctor Who. What’s particularly good about it is the amount of suspense in the story.
Thankfully, there are frequent dashes of humour as well. Watching the Doctor manoeuvre his way down the motorway and interact (albeit briefly) with the various passengers is highly amusing.
The other highlight of this episode is the Face of Boe’s final moments. The music is particularly good, and the Doctor’s reaction to his friend’s final message sends chills down the spine.
Though it was well received at the time of its broadcast, ‘Gridlock’ is rarely ranked amongst the very best of the Tennant era when it more than deserves to be.
