Doctor Who: 10 Obscure Facts You Never Knew

1. Michael Grade Didn€™t Cancel Doctor Who

Michael Grade Baron Grade is reviled in Doctor Who circles: he is seen as the man who killed the series in the €˜80s and a man who hates the show. However none of this (apart from the hate bit) is true. Michael Grade did suspend Doctor Who in 1986 and did fire Colin Baker, but, Grade had left the BBC by 1989 and was controller of Channel Four. The man who cancelled the series was Jonathan Powell; he took over from Grade in 1987. It is true that Grade did hate the show in 1986 but he has praised the new series - on seeing the first episode of the new series he apparently said that he €œloved it€. Many Doctor Who fans don€™t like the classic series, therefore, if we can accept them as €œtrue Whovians€ then I don€™t know why Michael Grade should not be accepted into the fold.
