1. He Has Survivor's Guilt
The Doctor may be a hero, but he is most certainly not a 'good' man. He is responsible for many deaths, some he causes directly and others are people sacrificing themselves so that he may live. The Doctor, then, is a martyr who has the unfortunate ability to live past his sacrifice and deal with the aftermath. I guess regeneration is good for something other than series longevity. The series hasn't completely overlooked it, but we need to remember not only is the Doctor the last of his species, but he IS the reason the Time Lords died. The details of the Time War might never be explored, so we don't know if it was Eccleston's Doctor that pulled the proverbial trigger but we certainly see the man he plays left afterwards. He's cold, dismissive and we have to see him grow into the Doctor that we're used to. Slowly, Eccleston reveals the jokey side that every incarnation has in some form, but when the big bad aliens come a-calling, he's all business. Nobody does this better than Eccleston. We have the Time War to thank for that. Do you agree? Share your own favourite Eccleston moments below, or state your argument for an alternative Doctor.
