Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Last Christmas Is Probably The Best Special Yet

4. An Intriguing Premise

Previous Doctor Who Christmas Specials have opted to steer clear of some of the show's more serious and scary themes in favour of a more lighthearted affair but that definitely wasn't the case with this one. The overriding premise of Last Christmas was an ambitious and intriguing one which will no doubt be discussed and dissected by fans for many months to come - probably until the 2015 Christmas Special comes along, actually. Suffice to say, next year's one has already got a lot to live up to. The exploration of dreams has already been widely covered within the outlandish realms of the fantasy genre, most notably in Christopher Nolan's 2010 blockbuster epic Inception, although even Leonardo DiCaprio would have trouble getting his head around this one. It wasn't just about dreams but dreams within dreams, too - a concept that DiCaprio's Inception alter ago, Dom Cobb, is all too familiar with. What Doctor Who has once again done - and extremely successfully, it has to be said - is taken a popular idea and given it its own timey-wimey twist whilst ensuring it's still accessible for fans of all ages, and for that it deserves all the credit it gets. Something tells us, though, that the members of the audience who were starting to feel the effects of their festive tipples were no doubt find it more difficult to keep up.
