Doctor Who: 10 Reasons Shona McCullough Should Be A New Companion

3. Doing It For The Banter

Shona has already proven that she's got plenty of it. In fact, the majority of the episode's most memorable quotes and one liners were spoken by her. When she first laid eyes on the Doctor and Clara, for example, she described them as "the skeleton man and a girl in a nightie", which pretty much sums them up. She'd no doubt bring a much needed dose of comic relief to the proceedings using her dry wit to highlight some of the more outlandish aspects of her timey-wimey adventures. The companions have always served as the viewers' eyes but has one ever served as the viewers' mouths? How many times have you found yourself screaming blasphemies at the television screen, for example, whenever a character has entered a dark room or followed a noise that they really shouldn't (and, let's face it, realistically just wouldn't)? Shona could shout those blasphemies on our behalf but she'd have to keep it PC unless the series is moved even later in the schedules. Shona's first encounter with a Dalek has the potential to be a particularly humorous affair. "It's just a giant pepperpot on wheels" - or words to that effect. Going a little deeper, there's also an initial suggestion that Shona uses humour as a defence mechanism (maybe that has something to do with Dave?) and it's always interesting to watch the layers of a companion unravel as their story progresses. A good companion is like an onion. They come with lots of layers and the ability to make you cry. Amen to that.
