Doctor Who: 10 Secrets Of The TARDIS You Need To Know
5. The TARDIS Is Powered By A Black Hole
If you're going to fly about in a hefty old time machine, hopping between planets and just generally being a nuisance across all of space and time, then chances are you're going to need a pretty big fuel supply. Now nuclear energy is one thing, but imagine having the literal heart of a collapsed star in the middle of your ship powering everything you do.
The 'Eye of Harmony' is a super compressed and somewhat stabilised miniature black hole that is placed inside of every TARDIS in order to power its flights back and forth through time. Though extremely efficient (the miles-per-gallon on that one would be insane) it is not an entirely flawless system, and does require infrequent refills of Artron energy from 'rifts' - holes in the space-time continuum dotted throughout the universe and essentially a little pit stop for all of your time travel needs. How's that for convenience?
