Doctor Who: 10 Things You Never Realised About Series 6 Of NuWho

7. Saving Companions

Since Doctor Who's revival, companions have seemingly had the worst luck with The Doctor. While many do not wish to leave, they are eventually forced to by forces outside of their control, be it stuck in an alternate universe (Rose Tyler) or having your memories wiped due to possible death (Donna Noble). The only companion prior to Series 6 to leave of their own free will was Martha Jones, and that was only because she wanted romantic involvement with the Doctor, and he was not willing to reciprocate. Amy and Rory Williams had been travelling with the Doctor since the beginning of Series 5 (technically Rory joined a few episodes later) and the Doctor, realising the danger his companions seemed to face, made the difficult decision to drop Rory and Amy off in 21st century London, handing them keys to one of the houses there. While Amy did not want to stop travelling, the Doctor informs her that he didn't want to see them die, and would rather travel alone than to say goodbye to a companion the hard way. This arrangement was only temporary, though (to the Doctor's dismay), as Amy and Rory resumed traveling with him a few episodes later, although they subsequently met heir demise, of sorts, halfway through Series 7... exactly what the Doctor was trying to avoid. It was bound to happen eventually. The old quote "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry" applies to this scenario...
