Doctor Who: 10 Times A Companion Stole The Show

10. Mickey Smith - Zeppelin Pilot

Mickey Smith was originally introduced as Rose Tyler's boyfriend during the first series of NuWho. He was originally mocked by the Ninth Doctor for his lack of wits and courage before stepping up to the mark at the end of the series in order to help Rose return to the Doctor on Satellite Five (more on this later). Mickey's role in the revived series continued to grow, taking the huge steps from cowardly mechanic to freelance alien fighter with his new wife Martha Jones (Smith?). Arguably, the moment in which Mickey finally grew up may well have been the part he played in the destruction of the new race of Cybermen in the episode The Age of Steel. After somehow managing to hack what would have been a state of the art computer system, Mickey transferred override codes for the Cybermen's Emotional Inhibitors to the Doctor Which caused the newly created Cyborg army to explode, taking Cybus Industries with it. Hurrah! Things looked bleak for the Doctor, Rose and Pete Tyler before Mickey managed to pull them out of the soon to be destroyed factory before piloting the zeppelin to safety. Mickey's journey may not have been the most important of NuWho but it was a story that many fans could relate to nonetheless. Mickey was often treated like a liability, despite continually showing that he could step up. He found his voice in this story, and with it, a new found respect from the Doctor.
