Doctor Who: 10 Times Captain Jack Died And Lived To Tell The Tale

10. How It All Began

By the end of Series 1 Captain Jack Harkness had established himself as a fully fledged resident of the TARDIS but when he was unfortunately exterminated by the Daleks in The Parting of the Ways, it really did look like it was the end of him for good. Luckily for him, though, Rose Tyler had other ideas. After staring into the heart of the TARDIS and absorbing the energies of the time vortex (you really couldn't make this stuff up, could you?), Rose used her temporary and ominous Bad Wolf personna to bring Jack back to life. As she was unable to control her newfound powers, she brought him back permanently and thus his new life of immortality had begun. He didn't know it at the time, of course. He was no doubt just as confused as the rest of us to have been shot down by a Dalek and live to tell the tale but it didn't take him long to realise that he was the man who can never die. He didn't even get to ask Rose about it, either, since the TARDIS dematerialised before Jack had the chance to step back aboard. The Doctor did think he was dead, though, and he was about to regenerate himself, so he generally had bigger fish to fry. Left abandoned and alone on Satellite Five, Jack used his initiative by attempting to transport himself back to 21st century Earth using his ever handy vortex manipulator. He actually ended up landing in the mid-19th century, though, where he decided to hang around until he'd eventually cross paths with the Doctor once more. Thankfully he had plenty of deaths on the way which would help him to pass the time.
