Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Was Out Of Their Depth
8. Confronting The Dalek
Still racked with guilt from fighting in the Time War, the Ninth Doctor burned with rage underneath his charming exterior, and nowhere is that more apparent than when facing the lone Dalek in Henry Van Statten's alien museum. Infused with a spark of humanity after being rejuvenated by Rose's touch, this particular Dalek wasn't quite itself. It had started to feel remorse for its actions, and simply wanted to bask in the light of the sun before dying peacefully. But the Doctor's anger got the better of him, and all his bitter hatred for the Daleks came boiling to the surface when he faced down the Dalek with a powerful alien weapon.
The Doctor wasn't thinking straight. He had allowed his rage to consume him, overriding his moral code and tendency to use brains over brawn, and driving him to simply slaughter the Dalek at all costs. He almost seems willing for Rose to be collateral damage, as long as he gets to rid the universe of the Daleks once and for all. Thank goodness that Rose was there to stop him then, to short-circuit his anger and make him realise how a lust for vengeance had consumed him. Rose helped him realise that this creature had mutated into something new, and that if he slaughtered it mercilessly, he would mutate as well.
