Doctor Who: 10 Times The Doctor Was Out Of Their Depth

9. Panic On The Tsuranga

Doctor Who Midnight
BBC

After accidentally getting herself and her companions caught in the detonation of a sonic mine while trawling a junk planet, the Doctor finds herself on the hospital ship Tsuranga. Disorientated and confused, she wakes up, ignores the advice of the shipboard medics, and starts to limp around the ship looking dazed and unhinged. She starts to panic, telling medic Astos that she's worried about her TARDIS, dismissing his pleas for her to return to the assessment zone so they can finish finding out what's wrong with her.

She then barges into a number of private medbays, disturbing the hospital patients while questioning them on how to get out. She doesn't seem to realise how disruptive she's being, but it's clear that having to keep still and do as she's told doesn't come naturally to the Doctor. As it turns out, she was so wrapped up in her own anxiety that she didn't even realise they were on a spaceship. Once she learns, she immediately looks for a way to turn it around so she can get back to her TARDIS.

Eventually, Astos has a stern word with the Doctor and points out how selfish she's being, only thinking about herself with no consideration for the other patients on board, or for the medics. The Doctor quickly apologises, admitting that he's right. The Doctor was so out of her depth here that a different, darker side of her was briefly revealed: one which doesn't mind if people get hurt, as long as she gets what she wants.
