Doctor Who: 10 Traumatising Monsters That Scarred You For Life

5. The Boneless

Don€™t be fooled by the terrible name, they are not to be taken lightly. They are two-dimensional beings from another universe that recently discovered that the world of three-dimensions exists (which was bad news for us, because it just so happens to be the human world!). At first they experimented on three-dimensional objects by reducing them to two-dimensions, making them look like paintings on the wall. If it was a living life they were essentially killed by the process. After much experimentation, they gained the power to put themselves into the three-dimensional plane, continuing whatever it was they were doing and reduce every living thing in their path to wall paint. Seriously grim stuff. Visually, they might be the best CGI the show has ever come up with, always alternating between 2D and 3D versions of the humans they killed. Everything from the way they look, to the way they turn objects into pictures, is so creative. And there are so many twists and turns as to how they use their abilities. A visual surprise behind very corner and knowing that all it takes for them to kill people is comparable to clicking a button on a camera adds that extra touch of creep. It was never clear what exactly they were doing in the three-dimensional plane, though, and it€™s not even clear if they know they were killing innocent lives in their experiments. Maybe they were just as scared as the humans? Were they even on Earth to invade? The idea is that if they have different rules of physics in their world, the same may apply to the way they perceive. An attack of three-dimensional being might not be an attack in the perception of gods. In this ordinary world it's called "lack of communication". That is what the Boneless represent. There's fear in the different, fear of the unknown, and the dangers of misinterpretation...
