Doctor Who: 10 Traumatising Monsters That Scarred You For Life

6. The Clockwork Droids

The first time the Clockwork Droids were shown on screen, in Series 2's The Girl in the Fireplace, they were a group of androids that travelled in time to stalk a little girl until adulthood so that they could monitor her until €œher parts€ had matured... and what's creepier than that!? The metaphor doesn't even need further explanation. Doctor Who is sick. They actually needed her organic parts to power their damaged ship, but still€ What's so scary about the Clockwork Droids is that, while other monsters would try to kill humans out of of hatred or animal instinct, the Droids kill humans because, with their lack of purpose or understanding, they see humanity as simple clockwork parts that can be used, differed only by the quality of their brand name. A different and deranged view in the value of a human life. In short, that little girl they were stalking was just an unripe Ferrari with gorgeous "parts". Again, Doctor Who is sick. The second version of the Droids appeared last year to serve a different purpose, though. It was revealed in the Series 8 premiere Deep Breath that they actually admire humanity, that machinery, to them, can be improved by simply being organic. And they need to be something more like them through mind and soul. If they are humans, maybe they are actually worthy of paradise after all? It helps - or doesn't - that they are a creepy visual marvel to behold, with their clunky movement, lack of eye contact and expression, bordering on the uncanny valley. There is so much room for tension filled stories right there. Watch out, Autons. The real creepy mannequins have arrived!
