9. Seeing Double
Martha Jones wasted no time in firmly establishing herself as one of the most popular Doctor Who companions in history so her legion of devotees were left heartbroken when she decided to call it after just one series (more on that later). Their spirits were lifted, though, with the subsequent announcement that she'd be back with an almighty vengeance in Series 4 after temporarily treading the boards in the show's adult orientated spin off, Torchwood (again, more on that later - apparently it's too much to ask for a Doctor Who countdown to be in order!). She summoned the Tenth Doctor back to planet Earth in The Sontaran Stratagem which gave fans two Martha Jones' for the price of one when she got cloned in a huge tub of green goo before her demonic doppelgänger used her counterpart's authority as UNIT's medical officer to partake in the Sonatarans' evil bidding. It was a really long day. Things happened and there was stuff and shenanigans (beautiful word, 'shenanigans') but the scene in which Martha (the real Martha - it can get a bit confusing!) comforts her clone in her final moments is widely remembered for its heartbreaking poignancy. Because you never know how long you've got left, the clone Martha wisely pointed out... before dropping dead less than two seconds later. Touché.
