Doctor Who: 10 Underrated Stories In New Who
6. Kill The Moon
It doesn’t get much weirder than this. The moon is an egg, and it’s going to hatch! Nobody knows whether the creature inside will be friendly or dangerous, so it’s up to the people of Earth to vote on whether to let the hatchling go or to kill it.
Throughout the episode, the Doctor takes a backseat to let Clara make important decisions about her home planet. The pressure on Clara is enormous, and she’s also got her school student, Courtney, to take care of too since she came along for the adventure. It’s an episode that opens up deep conversations around the morals and ethics of abortion and how far should we go for “the greater good?”
It all culminated in one of the greatest character moments for Clara when she breaks down on the Doctor and berates him for leaving her to make the hard choices. It’s a tough moment to watch as Jenna Coleman’s performance is genuinely heartbreaking. On the flip side, it gives Peter Capaldi's Twelfth Doctor a darker twist that we had seen previously, but never on this scale.
It left audiences shaken at how far removed this new Doctor was from his last incarnation and made us question whether he really was a good man, as he had asked himself throughout the series.
