5. Demons Of The Punjab
Jodie Whittaker’s first series was somewhat controversial; even her casting had split the fandom. However, she proved her talent by stepping up to the role and stealing our hearts, despite some poor writing.
On closer inspection, most of her episodes could be considered as underrated gems except for The Tsuranga Conundrum. Surely we can all agree that we should forget that one. Demons of the Punjab, however, was one of the most beautiful episodes of Jodie’s first season.
In Demons of the Punjab, Yaz wants to learn more about the origins of a broken watch she was given by her grandmother. When they go back in time, the fam finds themselves in the middle of a very personal battle during the brutal partition of India. This one gives us all we want in a Doctor Who story. It’s educational, features interesting characters who we genuinely care for, mystery and intriguing monsters.
It was an episode that proves that it's usually the humans who are the most dangerous villains. It was a very intimate story, which ended with a painful, emotional gut punch. It's impossible to not cry at the end, especially with that breathtaking version of the end credits music.
