Doctor Who: 10 Underrated Stories In New Who

3. The God Complex

Season 6 was dark. The God Complex was probably one of the darkest of the dark. It was a surreal episode that did everything it could to disorientate its audience and make us feel uncomfortable. From its setting in a 1980s, Overlook Hotel-inspired location, to the unsettling, jaunty music, this episode was filled with scares.

It’s a complicated episode, expertly written by Toby Whithouse, and the visuals always catch us off guard. Clowns, ventriloquist dummies, people losing their minds and that brutal gorilla all come together to keep us uneasy. Throw in the minotaur and the Doctor inadvertently leading people to their deaths, and you can see why it's so twisted.

The episode gave us Rita - the best companion who never was. Her death was genuinely shocking and heartbreaking. What was worse was that the Doctor had caused it. It’s no surprise that this entire episode is about The Doctor’s own God Complex and when the dying Minotaur talks about an ancient being soaked in the blood of galaxies, the narcissistic Doctor doesn’t realise the creature is referring to him.

If that weren't enough, it ends with the Doctor dumping Amy and Rory on Earth after realising how dangerous he is to them. It's still leaves us with goosebumps and feels unbelievable that it happened, in the best way possible.

Simon is a writer, cat dad and presenter of a geeky radio show with his husband. He loves Doctor Who (except 10 who can get in the bin…only joking.) He idolises Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft and would 100% be a Sith Lord in a galaxy far, far away. He wishes life was like a musical so he’d actually be a good singer.
