Doctor Who: 10 Unresolved Storylines & Mysteries That Need To Be Explored
8. The Disciples Of The Light
Series 2's superb Event Horizon-lite two-parter - The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit - sees the Doctor face-off with the ultimate Big Bad: the Devil, or is heavily inferred to as the definitive version of evil incarnate. It's a stickler for registered trademarking that one.
Having possessed poor old Toby and the Ood, and done away with Scooti, the Beast and the Doctor finally engage in some spine-tingling verbal jousting, accompanied by some suitable gothic organ music.
How did you end up on this rock?
The Disciples of The Light rose up against me, and chained me in the Pit for all eternity.
When was this?
Before time.
What does that mean?
Before time.
What does 'before time' MEAN?
Before time and light and space and matter. Before the cataclysm. Before this universe was created.
Whoever this civilisation – The Disciples of the Light – were (are?), they've got some serious skills to take on and imprison Beasty Boy, and all taking place before time itself! Something which the Doctor cannot comprehend. They must be on a par with other cosmic beings like the Celestial Toymaker, the Eternals and the Black Guardian - and we know how awesomely powerful that trio are. Now for some flight of fancy fan theory.
With the Timeless Child revelation in mind, maybe the Doctor's own race is the Disciples, and was even part of the big battle to defeat the Beast. Moreover, after landing at the bottom of the Pit, the Doctor was the one who provides himself breathable air in order to keep him alive and send the Beast into the abyss of the black hole. Oh how very Doctor, that really is some timey-wimey forward planning.
