Doctor Who: 10 Villains Who Should Return For Russell T Davies' New Series

1. The Autons

Like the Macra, the Autons didn't originate in the RTD era, but that's the last time they were used as the main villains of an episode. They did disguise themselves as Roman soldiers in the Moffat-era story The Pandorica Opens/The Big Bang, but they weren't primary foes.

Their last outing as primary foes was over 17 years ago, in Series 1's Rose. As shop-window mannequins come to life, they were quite creepy here, lumbering about the place and mercilessly gunning down innocent humans (poor Clive). Along with their disembodied overlord the Nestene Consciousness, they were defeated by the Ninth Doctor, but this is Doctor Who - defeat, or even death, are not barriers to a potential return.

With better technology and a bigger budget, RTD could put a terrific modern spin on the Autons. Their disturbing mannequin form would make them a great villain in a horror story, but he could also go down the action route, with those sneaky gun-hands allowing the Autons to go all shooty shooty when the situation calls for it.

And hey, the Autons were the very first villains RTD used in his original era, so let's bring things full circle and have them kick off Series 14!

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
