Have you ever been in a life-threatening situation where you're desperately trying to make a point that no-one understands? Have you ever looked for something to illustrate your point but found nothing but a screwdriver?
Well, the Doctor hasn't (that we know of).
In World Enough and Time, this is exactly the situation that the Twelfth Doctor finds himself in, and he jumps at the opportunity to pull his sonic screwdriver apart to reveal a red marker pen hidden inside.
Another subtle nod to the device's increasingly long list of uses, it was a brilliantly comedic moment used to lighten a particularly dark and serious story.
While it's probably more funny than it is weird, when framed against the device's origins, it's a particularly strange function for the show's writers to throw in.
After this, it's easy to imagine the Doctor picking up a job at Coal Hill, marking homework with the pen inside the sonic screwdriver.
