Doctor Who: 10 Wise Things We Learnt From Tom Baker's Doctor

10. Jelly Babies Are Essential

Tom Baker Fourth Doctor Jelly Baby What are the necessary items needed to survive in a hostile world? A gun? Medical supplies? Armour? A platoon of soldiers? In his time, the Doctor has used weapons and often relied on gadgets and his trusty Sonic Screwdriver. However, only the Fourth Doctor was wise enough to know that a sweet can get you a long way. Did the Doctor find the bag of original jelly babies in his new frock coat in Robot? Or did he pop off and get them - stopping off to fix Xoanon on the way? Straight away, like a benevolent uncle, the Doctor used his jelly babies to charm Sarah Jane into going off with him in the TARDIS. Make no mistake - the jelly baby sealed the deal, resulting in the most enduring partnership in the history of Doctor Who. While Capaldi glowers, Baker's Doctor would disarm, offering up the bag of treats. This approach got him a long way and shows that an act of initial kindness can open many doors. Future Doctors such as the Eighth in San Francisco and even the Twelfth himself aboard the Orient Express remembered how their Fourth incarnation had used them and got results themselves. However, only the Fourth would have thought of bluffing a warrior with a jelly baby, on the planet of the Sevateem in The Face Of Evil. Admittedly, it didn't actually work but the attempt has to be respected. This move was obviously on the Eleventh Doctor's mind when he tried to bluff the Dalek Paradigm with a jammy dodger. That didn't work either.
