9. The Idiot's Lantern
Sticking with Series 2 now as an alien lurks in the satellite ariels and uses the most watched TV event of the 1950s to suck off the face of the entire nation. There's probably some sort of metaphor in there somewhere but unless you particularly enjoy the image of Billie Piper with no eyes, nose or mouth, then there really isn't much else to take away from this one. The Wire is scary enough but it would've made much more sense to invade an era of history in which TVs are actually a thing. It just seems like so much unnecessary effort to have to come up with a way to make TVs affordable before you can actually go about your evil bidding. True, she doesn't really have much else going on in her life but just think how further she would've got with her attempt at world domination if she'd picked, say, 2015 to invade instead. Practically the entire population of Britain has at least one TV in their households these days so she'd be guaranteed a much greater mortality rate. Or does everybody have to be watching the same programme at the same time for it to work? Does watching stuff on catch up keep you safe? See, these are the more interesting issues that this episode could have covered. A missed opportunity there, Gatiss.
