8. The 2nd Doctor The War Games
Well...it is a fact, Jamie, that I do tend to get involved. The Doctor The War Games is a long story, ten episodes, but it is an exciting and important one nonetheless. It begins with the Doctor, Jamie, and Zoe arriving smack dab in the middle of World War I. At least thats what they think. They are, in actuality, in one of the War Lords War Zones. Here, kidnapped soldiers, from all across time, are tested in battle so the War Lords can build the perfect army and conquer the galaxy. The Doctor realizes he cant defeat The War Chief and the other War Lords alone, and has to call in for help This serial is memorable for so many reasons. Not only do we meet another Time Lord, in the guise of The War Chief, but we get to see the unnamed Gallifrey for the first time. This is the only forced regeneration in the series history, as the other Time Lords put The Doctor on trial for interfering with other planets and races. The War Games is also the last story to feature Jamie and Zoe, and to be produced in black-and-white. Unfortunately, many of Patrick Troughtons stories didnt survive the BBC archive wipe. That said, here are a few honorable mentions for the 2nd Doctor: The Mind Robber (fun and surreal), The Seeds of Death (the only completely surviving Troughton era Ice Warrior story), and The Krotons (rubbish monster, fun story).
