Doctor Who: 12 Best Twelfth Doctor Episodes

11. The Zygon Inversion

Doctor Who Peter Capaldi
BBC Studios

With Clara replaced by Bonnie and the Doctor in mortal danger, the Zygon Inversion began with the Time Lord in a desperate position. It quickly proved even more exciting and imaginative than its predecessor, as Clara managed to take control of her dreamscape surroundings and save the Doctor’s life in the nick of time.

The thrills didn’t stop coming, as Bonnie interrogated Clara over the Osgood Box in a riveting battle of wills, and Kate turned the tables on Truth or Consequences through a cunning deception (complete with a great reference to the Brigadier).

The episode featured superb character work, as Osgood and the Doctor bonded on their journey to save Clara and encountered the tragic Etoine, whose hopes of living in peace were dashed by Bonnie's ruthless dedication to her vision. Clara and Bonnie also established a great dynamic, which allowed Jenna Coleman to showcase her amazing range as a performer.

The story culminated with an unforgettable confrontation in the Black Archive, as the Doctor drew on his compassion and memories of the Time War to try and convince Kate and Bonnie to stand down. Peter Capaldi’s acting was phenomenal, and his beautiful speech raised powerful points about war and forgiveness. It was heart-warming to see him finally succeed in his efforts, and ensure that the peace would survive.
