Doctor Who: 12 Great Big Finish Stories You Have To Listen To

12. Jubilee

Widely considered the worst Doctor on TV, Colin Baker's Sixth Doctor has experienced a complete renaissance on audio for Big Finish. It helps that one doesn't have to look at his multicolour coat on audio but care has also been taken to develop the character in a way the producer and script editor of his TV era were unable or unwilling to do.

Many of Colin's audios are among the best of the range but Jubilee in particular is a real belter. it was so well received that showrunner Russell T Davies asked Shearman to adapt it for the first season of NuWho. Though the result, Dalek, is one of the best of that debut run, the audio is even better, more ambitious and possesses a rich vein of black humour. In this version both an aged Doctor and a Dalek are prisoners in the Tower of London, held by the demented Rochester and his Machiavellian wife in an alternate Earth future where the British Empire still reigns.

Given a great script and a version of his Time Lord that is compassionate as well as bombastic, Colin Baker is a revelation and shows that - though it took him a while to get there - he deserves his place among his more popular peers. He also has a good ear for comedy and can even sing - check out Doctor Who and the Pirates for that particular trick!
