4. Idris Elba
Master-Making Role: John Luther in Luther Another ridiculously accomplished actor, who would not only be physically intimidating and a serious match for Smiths Doctor rather than just a mirror to him, but something gruff who would make you believe hes been through a lot. A seriously no-nonsense, single-minded Master who sees crushing The Doctor as an afterthought to whatever wicked plans he may have. And putting aside any campness, wed just have a seriously intelligent Master who could outwit The Doctor and not expose any weaknesses such as vanity or ego. Now, how much of a challenge would Stringer Bell prove to the bowtie? Enough to warrant him being a real contender for the role. Sadly, he may be more out of reach than Sheen, because quite rightly hes getting bigger and bigger (and is another Prometheus alumni. Many of my choices seem to be weirdly connected to Moffat, Middle earth, Life on Mars or Prometheus. Hmm)
3. Joe Absolom
Master-Making Role: Boylan in Girl Number Nine Did anyone see Girl Number Nine? The guy was terrifying! Absolom is a wonderful actor, but I believe hes at his best. And, I mean this in a nice way, hes a little bit odd-looking, as is Smith. Theyre both unconventionally attractive, both sort of alien in their looks. You believe this man is a timelord. And hed be an utterly menacing, brutal Master. The Doctor, Smith in particular, rarely gets his hands dirty in a physical sense. Yes, he blows up planets, lets bad people die and gets very angry, but how often do we see him face someone head-on? Its something he doesnt really have to do. I imagine with Absolom as The Master, hed have to face up to his limitations and learn how to compete with a Master who doesnt pull his punches.
