Despite being quite a "basic" monster by Doctor Who standards, the Toclafane are still quite creepy, and a large part of this is due to the way they speak.

They sound just like ordinary humans, which might not seem intimidating on paper, but their normal, emotionless voices become incredibly chilling when paired with their deadly blades and unstoppable lasers, and their generally relentless desire to kill.

So, who voices them? Well, during the commentary, Tennant points out that the Toclafane (at least, some of them) were brought to life by a pair of actors who might sound familiar to fans of the show.

One of these actors is Zoe Thorne, who voiced the Gelth in Series 1's The Unquiet Dead...

...and the other is Gerard Horan, who played Father Of Mine in Series 3's Human Nature/The Family Of Blood.

Both actors did a fantastic job with their other roles, so it's not at all shocking that they were asked back to voice the Toclafane.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
