Doctor Who: 13 Cool Details Russell T Davies Just Revealed About The Stolen Earth & Journey's End
1. The Episode's Alternate Ending Includes A Cyberman Cameo
As with the previous deleted scene we discussed, this is not new information, but again, it's worth mentioning for those people who might not be in the know.
One thing that Davies liked to do during his Doctor Who tenure was to set up the Christmas episodes at the very end of his series finales: the Ninth Doctor regenerates in The Parting of the Ways (setting up The Christmas Invasion), Donna appears at the end of Doomsday (setting up The Runaway Bride), and the Titanic crashes into the TARDIS in Last of the Time Lords (setting up Voyage of the Damned).
He actually wanted to do something similar with Journey's End too, but in order to preserve the downbeat tone of the episode's ending, he ultimately chose not to. Regardless, a different ending was shot, and you can check it out right here:
In this alternate conclusion, the Doctor leaves Donna with Wilf and departs in the TARDIS. Then, there's a quick shot where Donna actually hears the TARDIS (in the final cut, she doesn't), followed by a cliffhanger in which the Doctor is cornered by two Cybermen.
This, of course, was intended to set up the Cybermen-centric 2008 Christmas special, The Next Doctor. However, the sad ending we did get works perfectly, and there was just no need for this extra little scene.
