One of the most exciting things about this story was that we got to see many different corners of the Doctor Who universe come together, with characters from Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures linking up with the main TARDIS team.

However, it was a tiny bit disappointing that we didn't get to see the entire Sarah Jane squad. Now, we're absolutely not complaining about what we did get - because, to quote a certain Time Lord, it was fantastic - but it feels a little odd that the likes of Maria and Clyde didn't appear alongside Sarah Jane and Luke.

In order to explain why they're nowhere to be seen, Maria and Clyde are given a quick mention in The Stolen Earth, but the actual, real-life reason for their absence was - no surprises here - budget constraints.

In a tweet, Davies said that he would've liked to include more Sarah Jane characters, but he had to cut certain corners in order to save money, and reducing the number of cast members was a sacrifice that had to be made.
