The clockwork droids are one of the most memorable monsters in the show, largely thanks to their mechanical sound effects, unsettling masks (that thin smile and those dead eyes... nightmare fuel) and their penchant for blades.

It's hard to imagine them looking, sounding or acting any differently, but at one point in time, Moffat wanted them to be a little bit... hairier.

In a Twitter exchange, Davies and Moffat discussed how, early on, the clockwork droids had hair covering their faces (like Samara from the Ring movies), which might have actually been creepy, depending on the lighting of the scenes and the colour of the hair. We'll just never know.

In addition, Moffat hinted that the final masked design of the droids was producer Phil Collinson's idea.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
