Doctor Who: 14 Cool Details Revealed In David Tennant's The End Of Time Part One Commentary

1. The Master's Face Has Been Sneakily Hidden Within This Special Effect

If you thought that the TARDIS stained glass window was a cool special effect, it's got nothing on this one.

At the end of the episode, the Master turns every human on Earth into a clone of himself. He does this by using an Immortality Gate, which sends out a huge ring of blue energy all across the planet. When watching the episode normally, it doesn't look like there's anything particularly special about this blue ring - it's a great effect, sure, but nothing standout - but as pointed out by Lyn, it's a lot better than you think.

If you look closely when the ring first bursts out of the Immortality Gate, you can just about make out a face that's embedded within it (see the above image). According to the director, this is actually John Simm's face, "embossed" into the blue ring by the special effects team. Cool, right?

Considering that this blue ring causes everyone on Earth to turn into the Master, the fact that his face can be seen here is a really neat touch.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
