Doctor Who 2005 Cast: Where Are They Now?

Christopher Eccleston's fantastic performance as the Ninth Doctor set the stage for over 15 years (and counting!) of Doctor Who dominance on the small screen.

Due to the controversy surrounding his departure at the end of the 2005 series, he hasn't yet returned to the show physically, but he has lent his voice to a series of Ninth Doctor audio adventures for Big Finish, which are due for release in 2021.

Prior to joining Doctor Who, Eccleston was already a familiar face on the big screen, and after he regenerated, that didn't change. He continued to appear in films, but because he had bad experiences making blockbusters like G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra and Thor: The Dark World, his movie work has taken a backseat to his TV work in recent years.

He appeared in HBO's The Leftovers from 2014 to 2017, and worked with the BBC once again on the popular drama series The A Word, which aired Series 3 in 2020.

Looking ahead, he's set to appear alongside Wonder Woman's Connie Nielsen in the psychological drama series Close To Me, and with Doctor Who's 60th anniversary just around the corner, who knows - the Ninth Doctor might be about to make a grand onscreen comeback.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
