Doctor Who: 30 NuWho Characters Who Would've Made Fantastic Full-Time Companions

15. Alonso Frame

Doctor Who Blink
BBC

Appeared in: Voyage of the Damned, The End of Time.

The first day of a new job can be nerve-wracking. For Midshipman Frame - newly-qualified and on his trip out on a cruiseliner spaceship - that was an understatement.

After being shot, fighting off not-so Heavenly Hosts, and keeping the Titanic successfully in orbit until the dashing Doctor arrived, Alonso certainly deserves a promotion at the very least. In fact, Russell T Davies had planned on giving him something along those lines in his original draft of the series four finale.

"Midshipman Frame was going to be vital... He would have been a junior soldier in the Shadow Proclamation. He could have helped the Doctor cut through the red tape at the Proclamation, but - and this is the best bit - when the Doctor goes on the run from the authorities, I wanted Frame to go with him. He'd become a companion! The Doctor, Donna Noble and Alonso Frame, on board the TARDIS, searching for the Earth. What a great team! But not for long. When they arrive on the Dalek ship in 4.13, the zap! Frame is killed!"...

OK, perhaps not the best promotion ever. Thankfully, due to Russell Tovey having other actory commitments at the time, Alonso ended up having one enchanted evening with Captain Jack Harkness instead.

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
