Doctor Who: 30 NuWho Characters Who Would've Made Fantastic Full-Time Companions

6. Nancy

Appeared in: The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

The no-nonsense Nancy has the measure of the Doctor immediately: she ably performs the Batman disappearing trick on him, and admonishes the greedy Time Lord for taking two slices of meat - clearly Jelly Babies aren't giving him enough sustenance these days.

She's a canny and caring cockney: waiting for the family to vacate to their air raid shelter, leaving a sumptuous feast for the homeless urchins of London to tuck into. How could you not resist taking two slices of meat? And yet Nancy still insists on them being well-mannered. Even when she does get caught, she owns Mr Lloyd. Overall - as written in The Shooting Scripts from series one - "The kids, sitting round the table, are - incongruously - straight out of Oliver."

Add to that her derring-do, lilting lullaby skills, taking the whole time travel thing in her stride, and promising rapport with Rose, Nancy's got the complete companion package. Then again, given her emotional reunion with son Jamie (talk about getting you in the feels), she's already got an exciting adventure ahead of her.

Florence Hoath produces a standout performance that's on a par with Carey Mulligan's star turn in Blink. It's a shame she quit acting... imagine a West End musical with her and Sally Sparrow!

The name's Colbourn, James - yeah, doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
