Doctor Who: 4 Great Second Doctor Stories

2. The Invasion (Story 046, 1968)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2F41IIaP-k&feature=related In one eight-part (!) story, we€™re treated to the return of the Cybermen, one of the best villains in the series in the form of Tobias Vaughn, the reintroduction of the newly-promoted Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart and the introduction of Sergeant Benton and UNIT! In basically one fell swoop all the ground was laid for the Third Doctor€™s adventures, and in doing so, gave us a great Second Doctor story. Now this one technically isn€™t complete. No, two of the eight episodes remain missing. But when the story was released on DVD a few years ago, an animation company was hired to create animated versions of the missing episodes. This was possible due to all the soundtracks being intact, so while we don€™t have video for every story, we do have sound. And I€™m happy that the choice was made to do the animated episodes, because without those, I probably wouldn€™t have seen this story (I€™m not big on the reconstructions that are out there). That would have been a shame, because as I pointed out above, there€™s really a lot of greatness here.
