3. The Seeds of Death (Story 048, 1969)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usn4c88TbEs I like modern Who, I really do. I think Steven Moffat has done much to make the show really accessible and excellent. But one problem that I have with him, is that he seems to think the show should be more dark fairy tale and not so much in the way of science fiction. Frequently thats been the case in Doctor Who, and while it sometimes works, I tend to think that the hard SF stories are more interesting. A case in point is this one. Its very much a hard science fiction story. It features a Lunar colony and transporters, ala Star Trek. It shows what happens when people become too dependent on those transporters. It also features the Ice Warriors, a once-great alien race from Mars who have a rather nasty plan in mind for Earth. Its all very hard SF, and that works well. That its a really good story is also a nice bonus. Yes, the Ice Warriors look a bit silly and theres a bit too much technobabble at times, but its still fantastically enjoyable.
