3. Expanded The Format Of Doctor Who
Much of what we have come to consider "classic" Doctor Who began during Patrick Troughton's tenure. While the 1st Doctor had traveled to different planets and different times, Doctor Who's reputation as a show that would have children hiding behind the sofa, began under Patrick Troughton. The fearsome Yeti, The vicious Ice Warriors, The crafty Macra, The terrifying Great Intelligence; all debuted with the 2nd Doctor, raising the fear factor and criticisms that this "children's show" was going too far. The 1st Doctor's "historicals," where the Doctor would participate in actual historical events (The Reign of Terror, Marco Polo) gave way to the 2nd Doctor's "base under siege" stories where he and his companions would be trapped in a base of some sort while evil monsters sought to kill, capture or devour them. (Power of the Daleks, The Moonbase) Modern Doctor Who stories such as Dalek, The Water of Mars and Cold War all use this formula to great effect.
