Doctor Who: 5 Best Dalek Stories

3. Dalek (2005)

In an underground museum in Utah in the year 2012, a collector of alien artefacts possesses something unimaginably dangerous: the last Dalek in existence. After seventeen years with nothing but a voice only cameo in the 1996 Doctor Who film that made them sound like they€™d been inhaling helium, the rebirth of the Daleks for the new series needed to be something very special indeed. And it really was. This episode goes above and beyond in showing what the Daleks are capable of as a single almost dead Dalek manages to restore itself by taking advantage of Rose€™s naïveté and goes on a rampage with a death toll of hundreds. It even stops to raise a proverbial middle finger to people who make fun of Daleks for not climbing stairs. There€™s also some excellent alternate characterisation for the Doctor as we see how scarred by the Time War he is and how desperate he is to destroy the last Dalek. It also does what most people would think impossible. It makes you feel sympathy for a Dalek. The Dalek slowly mutates after absorbing Rose€™s DNA and begins to develop ideas and emotions of its own. Weary of trying to survive and horrified that it is no longer genetically pure, it commits suicide. And you can€™t help but feel sorry for it. A great base under siege story and a terrific return to form for the Daleks. Best Quote "The Daleks must survive!" "The Daleks have failed! Now why don't you finish the job, and make the Daleks extinct? Rid the universe of your filth! Why don't you just die?!""You would make a good Dalek." €“ The Last Dalek and the Ninth Doctor Useless Trivia This was the first Dalek story since 1974€™s Death To The Daleks to not include Dalek creator Davros.
