8. She Has Spoken To The Other Time Lords

The image above depicts what viewers were unsure they would ever even see - that is, the regeneration of what was, until then, the final incarnation of the Doctor. During last year's Christmas Special, The Time of the Doctor, the Eleventh Doctor vowed to defend Trenzalore from a plethora of enemies after accepting the knowledge that he would eventually end up dying (for good) on the planet. It really looked like it was the end for him at one point but then he - and us - discovered that the Time Lords were trying to get through to our universe from the pocket one in which Gallifrey is currently confined. Clara made an impassioned plea to the Time Lords and they subsequently granted the Doctor a fresh set of regenerations. As Christmas presents go, that one isn't too shabby! As it was Clara who managed to convince the the Time Lords to prolong the Doctor's life, they could feel the Doctor needs to continue to keep her safe which would be somewhat difficult for her to do were she no longer around.
