Doctor Who: 5 Reasons Why Jack Harkness Might Not Return

4. The Doctor Doesn't Like Jack

Doctor Who David Tennant I have always sensed that The Doctor feels overshadowed by Jack. David Tennant's Doctor wants to be the "Big I Am", the one that people notice. Nobody is allowed to be more interesting or attractive to humans than he is, or so it would appear. He finds Jack to be an irksome hinderance and he is highly displeased when the TARDIS crashes because Jack has launched himself to cling on to the outside - thereby setting the TARDIS off course. In the episode "Utopia," having a love-lorn companion must have been bad enough, but then Jack hitches a ride and needs babysitting too. The delight on The Doctor's face when he sees Jack on the screen, running towards The TARDIS and thinking he's dematerialised in time to leave Jack behind is delirious. The Doctor's displeasure concerning Jack "gatecrashing" The TARDIS is evident in the way he reacts to finding Jack dead on the ground when he steps out of The TARDIS. Whilst Martha recovers from her shock and her nurses' training kicks in, The Doctor merely looks at the inert body and says "Hello again. Oh, I'm sorry." When Jack eventually recovers (sending Martha into shock again, since she's already realised that he is perfectly dead) The Doctor berates him for "flirting" when Jack introduces himself to Martha and says hello. Essentially, here we have the return of Battle Of The Egos. Bonus points to Jack for scaring Martha - and the viewers - out of their collective skins on suddenly reviving.
