5. An Older Time Lord
A minor desire, to start. I'd rather like to see an elder actor take on the role, which we may receive in John Hurt, and I'm all for that. The first Doctor was a rather grizzled, elderly gentleman, but he still had the unmistakable spirit and exuberance that characterized the Time Lord. Matt Smith, by contrast, is the youngest actor to have played the role, which I have to confess I feel has a lot to do with the influence of American television, along with romance and sex appeal. I mean, there aren't many shows aimed at the same audience at Doctor Who that have a grizzled, elder protagonist. Think of your handsome Dean Winchesters and smooth-skinned Sherlocks. Don't get me wrong, they're great, but Doctor Who has always seemed...different from those shows. It's not afraid to do something wildly different, and while that doesn't always pay off, I'd love the BBC to take a bit of a risk and cast an actor more faithful to the old, classic days. A seasoned, older actor would be a nice change of pace in the 12th Doctor, both in appearance and attitude, while still hopefully retaining the flair and vigor that, let's face it, the Doctor has got to have.
