Doctor Who: 5 Ways Big Finish Enhances The Sixth Doctor
3. A More Likeable Personality
As said in the last entry, Big Finish’s scripts really improve Colin’s Doctor and make him so much more likeable. Big Finish regularly outputs stories where The Sixth Doctor is strong, charming, witty, and shows off exactly how brilliant this incarnation is. The new chemistry between The Doctor and Peri makes perfect sense when you hear how close Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant are. But Peri isn’t The Sixth Doctor’s only companion. With each new companion in the TARDIS, Colin’s incarnation is simply a joy, and it's understandable why you’d wish to travel with him.
Colin’s Doctor is a lot more defined than he was on TV. The audience was never truly given a chance to like or get to know this incarnation, beyond his arrogance. With the help of companions such as Evelyn, Flip and Constance, The Sixth Doctor’s more compassionate side is brought to the front.
You want to be able to support for your lead character, something which was occasionally difficult due to his attitude on TV and strangling your companion in your debut story won’t help. Colin clearly loves the role, and one of the many joys of audios is to hear that in how the character is now played.
