Doctor Who: 6 Reasons The Sixth Doctor Is Usually Hated
5. He Was At Odds With BBC
Along with Colin Baker topping many "Worst Doctor" lists, his regeneration scene, in which he turns things over to Sylvester McCoy, is typically ranked at the top of "Worst Regeneration Scenes" as well. Spoiler Alert (which isn't even a spoiler anymore): It wasn't even Colin Baker in that scene! Colin Baker had a falling out with BBC and was summarily fired from the show, making him the only lead actor to have been fired from the role. He was blamed directly for the low ratings, even though many of his stories were of less than great quality, and subsequently refused to return to film his own regeneration scene. As such, the scene in question was shot with Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor) in a blond wig, along with some computer effects covering his face until the regeneration was complete. Hell, even the reason behind his regeneration was weak. Whereas other Doctors had to deal with poisoning, falling from a large height or being gunned down in a gang fight, the Sixth Doctor simply bumped his head on the TARDIS console. While there were additional issues happening at the time (as fans would learn via audio and traditional books), a simple bump on the head, that would have knocked out just about anyone else, was enough to trigger a regeneration in the rebellious Time Lord. Perhaps if Colin Baker had returned to film the scene, it would have been a more fitting regeneration, however, no one could blame him for not returning, as being forced to take the blame for the show's decline in the mid 80s was nowhere near 100% his fault as insinuated.
