Doctor Who: 6 Reasons The Sixth Doctor Is Usually Hated

4. His TV Stories Were Subpar

As mentioned, the stories of the Sixth Doctor were and are widely cited as some of the weakest in Doctor Who history. While he did have some brilliant moments (Vengeance on Varos, for example, explained why the TARDIS always seems to be in less than pristine condition, while Mysterious Planet was the start of the Trial of a Time Lord series that introduced the Valeyard), most of his stories were, at best, just plain average. Part of this issue was the high turnover of writers during this period of time. Referring back to the Trial of a Time Lord series, the entire serial was itself a 14 part mini-series containing 4 different stories, all contained within the final season of Colin Baker's tenure. Problems ensued when, midway through the production of the season, the script editor quit. As such, the final stories for the season arc were not completed and it was up to a new staff to figure out exactly where they wanted to go with the story. This led to the revelation of the Valeyard being part of the Doctor himself from later on in his regeneration cycle, which, if followed up upon, would have made an excellent story. Sadly, though, the Valeyard has only been mentioned one other time in the television run of Doctor Who. Issues abound with the writing staff aside, those that were penned by one set of writers seemed on the weak side, and even a popular Doctor such as Tom Baker or David Tennant could not have saved some of the subpar stories that Colin Baker was saddled with.
